A dying institution

Neat article in the New York Times about the end of the stockyards in South Saint Paul, MN.  Some of my favorite memories growing up were of my grandfather taking my brother and me to the old McMinnville auction.  It was held Wednesdays at noon.  You could buy everything from cattle to horses to sheep to tackle.  It was something else.  Looking back, I’ve no idea whether the cattle were coming or going from Grandpa’s.  I do remember the seemingly giant steps which doubled as seats.  And I remember the cafe attached to the main building.  We used to grab lunch in there.  I’ve yet to find a better burger.

I tried to visit the McMinnville auction a few years ago, but it closed in 2002.  I guess if I want to relive that memory, I’ll have to settle for the Woodburn auction, which I always thought paled in comparison.  Looks like there’s one up in Woodland that might be a little closer.  I wonder if the auctions are as busy today as they were 25-years ago.

All Hail Mateo, Genius

My brother tells me he helped design this house which was featured in the New York Times this last week.  He’s also got some ideas for the Noodle compound in Belmont.

Once you accept the fact he’s smarter than you or me, life becomes much easier.  We’ll be making our rent checks out to him soon.

Friends With Benefits Study

The New York Times tells us of the first ever study of the FWB phenomenon. Beings how I’m a lone wolf and all, I’ve never participated in such a relationship. And the few 2am booty calls I’ve received over the years have gone unanswered. Which probably explains why I don’t get them anymore.

I’m not sure they’d work now that I’m in my mid-thirties. Everyone I meet seems to either have kids or some other scheduling conflict. The idea of scheduling sex in my Palm Treo isn’t that appealing. Does that make me weird? Probably. But whatever.

Welcome Back To Civilization, Tom Friedman

The New York Times has finally relented and decided to end its Times Select service.  They made their decision to wall themselves off from the blogosphere at the exact wrong moment and it’s seriously cost them in terms of relevance.  I’d almost forgotten Mo Dowd even existed.

The wall will begin coming down later tonight.  I’ll begin copy-and-pasting Friedman soon after.
