I emailed a friend in Ohio this afternoon to get a gauge on the mood there. Ohio is the swing state this time around; whoever wins there will most likely be the new president. The guys at the 538 have Ohio officially as a toss-up, but they include it in the red column. If the [...]

The Palin speech
September 3rd, 2008 by Chris Snethen · 3 Comments · Politics
Apparently I saw a different speech than everyone else. I mean I saw the same speech, it was shrill and after 8:00 (11:00 EDT) it went George Costanza “one too far”. But for the most part, I think she did exactly what she needed to do. She proved she could read a teleprompter. She also [...]

Everyone just calm down
August 18th, 2008 by Chris Snethen · 1 Comment · Politics
I learned an important lesson about politics in August a few years ago. The Bush administration got caught in something huge in the summer of 2003. I mean it was knock you off your feet huge. What was it? I couldn’t tell you. I remember writing about it. Getting all up in arms about it. [...]

Calm down, Oregon
April 24th, 2008 by Chris Snethen · 1 Comment · Politics
If the leaders of both major political parties in Oregon had their way, voters would have long ago cast their presidential primary ballots and the candidates would now be shifting their focus elsewhere. Instead, Oregon’s leaders did nothing and are about to reap the rewards. Get ready for a month-long ad blitz the likes of [...]

Are We Missing a Moment?

A reader at Talking Points Memo wonders.
At the moment, Obama leads by every conceivable metric– pledged delegates, popular vote, states won, caucuses won, and yes- primaries won. The uncommitted superdelegates who have been patient enough to witness 19 debates and 40 primaries could easily justify their decision to line up behind a nominee so we [...]

Hats off to Hill

I predicted a split on Rick’s show yesterday. Boy was I wrong. Hillary called her shot in Texas and Ohio and backed it up with a strong performance. We’ll see how the delegates shake-out, but one thing is clear. Obama cannot declare victory while losing. Yes, he still has a [...]

Look Who’s Talking Now
February 22nd, 2008 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Politics
NPR had what I thought was a fascinating piece tonight on the ads each candidate is currently running in Ohio and Texas. Hillary has gone almost exclusively with a narrator in her ads whereas Obama speaks for himself. A subtle yet significant difference.
The Superdelegates Are Feeling The Heat
February 11th, 2008 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Politics
Seems like just yesterday we were concerned that the Democratic superdelegates might thwart the will of the people. Things have sure changed in a hurry.
“She has to win both Ohio and Texas comfortably, or she’s out,” said one superdelegate who has endorsed Mrs. Clinton, and who spoke on condition of anonymity to share a [...]
