Arizona Cardinals: They seem to be getting B-pluses for their draft yesterday. I still don’t get the Dominique Rogers-Cromarte thing. The Deion Sanders seal-of-approval is just too much for me to overcome. I wonder if they’ll come to regret not drafting Mendenhall and cutting Edge. We should know around week [...]

Jim Goldsmith: April Fool
March 31st, 2008 by Chris Snethen · 4 Comments · Winter Hawks
Rumors out if the Hawk camp this afternoon suggest the front office was let go. If true, it’s a dark day in Hawk history. This does not bode well for the future of the franchise, either in Portland or elsewhere. It’s time for the league to step in and take over.
Update: Well, it’s true. [...]

Keep Your Shirts On, Vikings Fans
March 16th, 2008 by Chris Snethen · 1 Comment · Local, Sports
The NCAA tournament seedings came out this afternoon, just as I was heading to the hockey fights.
Sidebar: Seriously, whoever has the YouTube of the goal, send it to me. I’ll make you famous.
The Portland State Vikings ended up a #16 seed against Kansas. It shouldn’t have been a shock. Portland State has an RPI of [...]

Mercifully, The Cow Drops
March 16th, 2008 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Winter Hawks
Now before the entire Hawks front office get their knickers in a twist, let’s all take a moment to appreciate what “drop the cow” means.
Where’d “Drop the Cow” come from in the first place? From an anecdote I remember Eric Idle tell in the first season of Saturday Night Live, way back when I was, [...]

Lunch at Lloyd Center
February 28th, 2008 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Local, My American Life
I’ve found a new semi-secret lunch spot. Semi-secret because it’s out of my co-workers’ migratory path, yet still in plain sight. I get to catch up on podcasts while watching the skaters. I’m guessing there’s an ice skating competition coming up because there are three or four people down there walking through their routines. One [...]

Live From The Coliseum
December 31st, 2007 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Local, Winter Hawks
I added a plug-in to my blog software which finally allows me to blog from my cell phone. We’ll see how this goes.
The Hawks are currently down 2-0 to the rival Seattle Thunderbirds halfway through the first period. As bad as things look now, it’s not nearly as bad as Katie Harmon’s national anthem. If [...]

Weekend Wrap-Up
December 31st, 2007 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Arizona Cardinals, Man City, Sports, Trail Blazers, Winter Hawks
Blazers: Did I mention I picked up a ticket package a few weeks back? I gave a few of the seats away for Christmas and will no doubt be giving a few more out as things come up down the line. 20 games for $100 is a helluva deal. Yesterday’s game [...]

Is Ken Hodge Out?
December 9th, 2007 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Winter Hawks
From Gregg Drinnan’s blog…
Two WHL sources have indicated that the Portland Winter Hawks ownership group has told general manager Ken Hodge to stay home, meaning, one supposes, that he is suspended with pay. On Nov. 19, former Regina Pats captain Mark Janssens was named a special consultant to the CEO in the area of [...]

The Hawks Add to Their Scouting Staff
December 5th, 2007 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Winter Hawks
The Winter Hawks this week named Matt Bardsley as Director of Player Personnel. The press release touted Bardsley’s role in recruiting Dubinsky and Gaustad and “discovering” Chris Francis and Aaron McGill. It went on to tout Bardsley’s scouting record up and down the west coast.
That’s freaking great. The guy has “discovered” a [...]

Hockey In Portland
November 19th, 2007 by Chris Snethen · No Comments · Winter Hawks
Here’s a neat primer on the past and present of hockey in the Rose City.
I had a nice conversation with a couple from Kelowna on Saturday night. They mentioned it was their first time in the Coliseum. They were more used to the Rose Garden. They took a shining to the old barn though. I’ve [...]
