And here come the pregnant pictures

August 31st, 2008 Chris Snethen 5 comments

She looks pretty pregnant here.  Since Erik99559 says this is from the last day of the legislature, the photo was taken on or about April 13, 2008.  She gave birth on April 18th.

TeacherRefPoet may be right, I may well end up with egg on my face.  So be it.

I still have questions.

Update 1: And now suddenly one of the bump pictures is dated 2007.  Is the scrub in progress?

Update 2: Track Palin, the governor’s oldest son, went away to basic training in late September 2007, so that would make this picture from sometime prior to that, wouldn’t it?  However, this picture is missing Track.  Townhall says it’s from 2006.  Track would have been 17 and presumably still in high school, yet unavailable for a family photo?  And Piper, the youngest Palin daughter, would have been 5.  There is no 5-year-old in that photo.  This must have been taken after September 18, 2007.  But when?

Update 3: And now the picture in question has a date of 2006.  Did the ADN take the picture or was it supplied by the family?  I still don’t see a 5-year-old in the photo, but whatever.

Update 4: And now we’re back at it.  Here she is on March 14, 2008Here she is less than 30 days later.  Yeah, that doesn’t happen.  Thank you, “Kind“.

Update 5: And now Bristol is officially pregnant.

Here’s what a pregnant woman looks like

August 31st, 2008 Chris Snethen Comments off

The Kos diarist ArcXIX has found a good one.

Here’s Governor Palin seven-months pregnant with Trig, the baby she delivered in April of this year.

Here’s Sarah Palin pregnant with son Track in 1989.  Clearly, shes in her third trimester.

ArcXIX has also got some great pictures of Bristol holding Trig.  Of course those don’t mean anything by themselves, but it makes for interesting imagry.  The type you find on the cover of a tabloid in the checkout stand.

The McCain plumbers are going to have their hands full.

Update: Jack Bog is on to something here.

A blog worth watching

August 31st, 2008 Chris Snethen 3 comments

Here’s a guy from Alaska who’s just as mystified as to why McCain chose Palin as I am.  With all three “gates” (bridge, trooper, and baby) lighting up the Interwebs (I’m having a heckuva Sunday for traffic, tyvm), the McCain campaign is finally sending a team up to Alaska to find out what exactly it is they’ve purchased in Sarah Barracuda.

But now the cleanup crew has started. Palin’s praise of the Obama energy plan that was on her website? Scrubbed. Photos on the website during the time period she was supposedly to have been pregnant? Allegedly scrubbed too. John McCain’s organized vetting team? Supposedly on their way to Alaska right now. (Note to McCain staffers: Vet FIRST…it works out better that way.) The National Enquirer? Supposedly all over this already. Photos of the pregnant (or not) Palin are circulating everywhere. One thing is certain, the rumor mill has started, and there’s no getting this toothpaste back in the tube.

The toothpaste analogy is spot on and I think ultimately the Palin episode will be able to pull together all the different narratives about McCain’s judgment and his propensity to shoot from the hip.  McCain is in a major bind here though; if the team finds any merit to any of the accusations and he has to jettison Palin, there will be Hell to pay with the base.  If, on the other hand, they find nothing, it won’t stop The Enquirer or other investigative reporters from continuing to look into all of this.  For example, who, if anyone, was Bristol dating around the time she may or may not have conceived?  You think The Enquirer won’t find him?  You think The Enquirer won’t be looking for a birth certificate?  They found the one for John Edwards’ alleged love child, they can find Trig Palin’s.  Jack Bog’s insurance question will need to be answered as well.  The Palin’s are covered by the state, yes?

Good luck to the McCain plumbers.  They’re gonna need it.

There goes my fantasy team

August 31st, 2008 Chris Snethen Comments off

Tom Brady somehow slipped all the way to number 6 in my league’s draft this year.  He did not get past me.  Now I might be stuck with a lemon.  Great.

Do I stick it out with Cutler then?  Or do I pick up Pennington off waivers?  Decisions decisions.

Scenes from the Pie-Off

August 31st, 2008 Chris Snethen 4 comments

Big ups to the organizers of yesterday’s pie-off. It was a quintessentially Portland event in a quintessentially Portland location. I was planning to just name myself a judge early on, but, as I’m wont to do, I spaced it. Instead, the Professor took my spot.  It’s a good thing too.  After tasting 49 pies, I would have exploded.  It sounds like they’ll be expanding the field of judges next year, so you can put me down now.

You wouldn’t have known it yesterday as I hung out with the Bogdanskis and their kids, but I’m painfully shy when it comes to meeting new people.  This is why I failed to say hello to folks like DieselBoi (and his spectacular Utilikilt), LeLo, Gretchen, and (I think) Recovering Straight Girl.  This is also why I failed at outside sales and fail with the ladies in general.  Alas.

Anyway, I had fun.  Everyone else seemed to too.  Here’s a little of what I saw.

The Comcast experiment

August 31st, 2008 Chris Snethen 2 comments

The Interwebs are alight with this story about how Comcast is going to start capping monthly usage at 250 gigabytes of traffic per month.  While I don’t consider myself a power user or anything, I do download a fair amount of podcasts and occassional videos.

Curious to find out how much I consume, I went looking for a bandwidth meter so I could know where I stood and whether I should be concerned.  I pretty quickly found a program called BitMeter which does exactly what I want.  It gives me up-to-the-second stats on my usage and even gives cool looking graphs to show uploads and downloads.  The feature I really like, though, is it tells me how much I use each day, week, and month.  Like I said, perfect.

I’m only a few days in, but I can tell already that I’ll come in way under the 250 gig limit.  I downloaded three complete Wilco concerts yesterday and watched a bunch of YouTube stuff and still managed to only use about 1.5 gigs.  You have to get up around 8 gigs to start getting worried.  So a heavy download day (for me, at least) used less than 1% of my monthly allowance.  I think I’ll be fine…for now.

Is Sarah Palin a grandma?

August 30th, 2008 Chris Snethen 32 comments

If this is true, she’s done.  D-O-N-E done.

Update 1: Here’s a guy who fleshes out the birth timeline a little more.

In April, when she was eight months pregnant, Palin was at an energy conference in Texas where she was scheduled to speak. According to her own account, reported in Alaska newspapers, at about 4 am on the morning she was scheduled to speak she began to leak amniotic fluid. Nevertheless, she gave the speech several hours later then headed for the airport after consulting her Alaska physician who told her it was safe to fly. The flight from Dallas to Anchorage required a change of planes and she arrived approximately 12 hours later in Anchorage. According to Palin, one reason she flew home was her desire that the baby be born in Alaska. Upon arriving in Anchorage she traveled about 45 minutes to a hospital near Palmer where the 6 pound, 2 ounce baby boy was born early on the morning following the Governor’s departure from Texas.

It has also been floating in the blogosphere that Palin’s 16 year old daughter had, prior to Trig’s birth, been on leave from her Anchorage high school with mononucleosis.

I’m sorry, but if you’re 44 and pregnant, you and your baby are both at high risk.  You don’t fly nine hours to attend a conference in Texas.  And you sure as heck don’t fly nine hours back home after your water broke just so you can say your kid was born in Alaska.

Some investigative reporter is about to do what McCain apparently didn’t.  Between this and Gustav, this is shaping up to be a very bad week to be a Republican.

Update 2: More discussion here, here, here, and here.
