After much speculation over the last few days, Beltway Fred Thompson has finally pulled the plug on his candidacy. No doubt Coyote at NWRepublican is in mourning. Thompson should have won the nomination easily. He had the best of the establishment advisors around him and a serious groundswell of support among the true-believers. His problem was he just didn’t care and it showed.

So what now? Republicans have no one on their side who can unify the party on his own. Their only hope now is Hillary. And I must confess, if it comes down to McCain vs Clinton, I’ll probably vote for McCain. I really hope it doesn’t come down to that.
